In District 66 Race Walker Says Tassins Experience Sets Her Apart

(BATON ROUGE, LA) Metropolitan Councilwoman Martha Jane Tassin welcomed the endorsement of fellow Metro Councilman Mike Walker today in her bid to become the next State Representative for District 66. A special election has been called for March 5, 2005 to replace former State Representative Mike Futrell who has joined the staff of Senator David Vitter. Together, Tassin and Walker represent nearly all of the citizens residing in House District 66 on the Metro Council.

I can think of no better person to represent us in the legislature than Martha Jane Tassin, Walker said. She has lived in the district for over 20 years and knows our area very well. As councilwoman, she has worked closely with Mike Futrell, our civic associations, local businesses and me to keep our quality of life high and the district moving forward, Walker said.

Walker underscored the importance of electing someone with experience to replace Mike Futrell in the legislature. There are too many important projects either underway or soon to be underway across District 66, Walker said. Several of the projects have been years in the making and we cannot afford to lose the momentum that Mike Futrell gained for us. Martha Jane has been there every step of the way and will require no on-the-job training.

Tassin, a Republican who impressively won re-election to a second term on the East Baton Rouge Parish Metropolitan Council in September, is a retired teacher with 20 years experience in the East Baton Rouge Parish Public School System. In addition to her council duties, she currently serves as the Chairman of the East Baton Rouge Parish Planning Commission. She resides in Broadmoor Subdivision with her son Bradley. A graduate of Louisiana State University, Martha Jane is the widow of Metro Councilman Mike Tassin.

She is a member of the 2004 Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class, the Board of Directors of Working To Achieve, the CAN DO! Advisory Board, and the Volunteers in Public Schools (VIPS) Advisory Board and the Arthritis Alliance Board of Directors.

District 66 includes some of Baton Rouges most well known subdivisions including Afton Oaks, Broadmoor, Cedarcrest, Eastgate, Goodwood Homesites, Lake Sherwood Acres, Sherwood Forest, Villa Del Rey and Woodland Ridge.
