City’s Only Open Mic Relocates to Inferno Room on October 11.
Comics Excited About Returning to Where It All Started.
BATON ROUGE – October 3, 2005: Local comics are thrilled with the news of Baton Rouge’s only stand-up open mic show relocating to the site of the former Richoux’s. Starting October 11th, Red Stick Comedy’s weekly production of the “Downtown Comedy District” will be held at The Inferno Room on Tuesday nights. The downtown building on the corner of Florida and 3rd Street most recently served as the home of Parrot Beach, and is easily recognized by its historic neon Coca-Cola sign.
Richoux’s was the original venue for the “Downtown Comedy District” during its first year. Many performers and audience regulars still consider it the standard for comedy venues in the Capital City. It’s been called the “Cradle of Comedy” for Baton Rouge, since that’s where a majority of the local talent was discovered and developed.
The Inferno Room is the newest and hottest nightclub to open in Baton Rouge. Locally owned and managed, it turns into Dante’s Bistro during the day, serving outstanding bistro fare prepared by some of the city’s finest chefs. “Downtown Comedy District” audience members will be able to dine on appetizers and sandwiches as they take in the show.
One big change for regulars will be the night of the show. Ever since its premier on July 16, 2003, the “Downtown Comedy District” has been held on Wednesday nights. The decision to move the open mic to Tuesday nights was made in order to prevent scheduling conflicts with other events to be held at the club.
Red Stick Comedy started and continues to host the “Downtown Comedy District” to help local comedians, and would-be comedians, develop and display their talents in an environment conducive to the craft. It also offers another entertainment option for locals in keeping with the developing arts center downtown.
Shows start at 8:00 p.m. every Tuesday. Local comics, amateur and professional, are welcome to perform stand-up comedy for the general public. Performers should arrive and register before showtime at 7:30 p.m. Admission is three dollars for the public and waived for performers.
