By Mallory KeatingOn Feb. 6, President George W. Bush sent Congress a 2006 budget proposal of just under $2.6 trillion that calls for a reduction in many domestic programs and increases spending on the military and homeland security.
Bush argues that his $2.6 trillion budget will cut the nation’s $427 billion deficit in half by 2009. The new budget included $4.3 billion of cuts to education and the elimination of 48 programs nationwide. Closer to home, many state officials and watchdog groups have voiced concerns about the impact this will have on Louisiana, especially in the realm of education.
